FINDING LAN MULTIPLAYER GAMES

If a multiplayer game is being hosted on a computer which does not have access

to the internet, players will not be able to find the game in the standard

listing. Clients connecting to a LAN-only game will have to use the "Join LAN

Game" option under the multiplayer menu.

PERFORMANCE OPTIONS

PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATIONS: Select performance options depending on system

specifications

*Fast Performance: Highly recommended for (300MHz-450MHz) systems.

*Average Performance: Recommended for (500MHz-700MHz) systems.

*Slow Performance, High Detail: Recommended for (733MHz or Higher)

DISPLAY: This is the Advanced Display menu. Here you can customize the

following options:

*Texture Resolution: Configure texture resolutions for the World, Weapons,

Characters, Props, Special Effects, and Sky.

*Light Maps: Toggle between vertex shading and dual-pass textured lighting.

NOTE: Turning off Light Maps is one way to greatly increase performance. If

your system is near the minimum specifications and seems to run slowly,

turn Light Maps off.

*Mirrors: Toggle mirrors on or off, *Note: Resolution Screen Depth must be set

to 32-Bit, e.g. 800x600x32. This feature is not supported on video cards

without a stencil buffer.

*Shadows: Circular or None.

*Detail Textures: Turns on or off detail textures for higher texture detail at

close range.

*Environment Map: Makes objects in the world "shiny".

*Model Chrome: Makes guns "shiny".

*Trilinear Filtering: Removes mipmap banding artifacts. This feature is only

supported on video cards which support trilinear filtering.

*Triple Buffering: Reduces screen tearing and increases rendering performance

at the cost of more video memory.

SPECIAL EFFECTS: These options adjust various effects which alter rendering

performance.

*Tracers: Toggles tracers on fired weapons.

*Shell Casings: Turns on or off the shell casings ejected while firing.

*Muzzle Flash Lighting: Toggles the dynamic lighting associated with the muzzle

flash on guns.

*Weather: Toggles weather effects

*Weapon Impacts: Sets the number of remembered weapon impact effects.

*Debris: Sets the amount of debris caused by shooting a surface.

SOUND FILTERING EFFECTS: Toggles the use of dynamic sound processing to simulate

the environment.

*WARNING: This feature can cause performance issues

particularly on low-end machines.

DEDICATED SERVER (NolfServ.exe)

You can run a dedicated server on the Internet, or on your local LAN. Ideally,

the hosting system will exceed the minimum system spec for processor speed and

RAM. Players will experience smoother gameplay on your server if it has more of

both of these things. A high-bandwidth Internet connection (ISDN or faster) is

also preferable.

Run the dedicated server either by clicking the NolfServ server icon in your

start menu, or by double-clicking the NolfServ.exe in your Nolf installation

folder. You will then go through a multiplayer setup wizard. The pages of the

wizard correspond to the in-game hosting menus. Please refer to manual about

the in game hosting server options.

When you get to the last window of the wizard and hit the Finish button, there

will be a pause while the server starts and the first world is loaded. When the

server starts running, you will see the dedicated-server main window. This

window is broken up into 5 sections that are described below:

SERVER INFO

*Name: This is the name of your server as seen by players when they are looking

for a server to join.

*Running Time: This shows the total time your server has been running.

*Total Players: This shows the total number of players that have visited

your server.

*Peak Players: This shows the highest number of players that were on your

server at one time.

GAME INFO

*Players: This shows the number of players currently on your server.

*Time in Level: Shows the time the current level has been running.

*Average Ping: Shows the average ping of the players currently in your level.

PLAYERS

This shows the list of players that are currently on your server. The list has

the following columns that describe each player:

*Name: The name of the player.

*Ping: The ping from the player to the server.

*Kills: The number of kills the player has scored in this level.

*Time: The length of time this player has been on the server.

There is a button below the list of players labeled "Boot". Use this button to

remove a player from your server.

LEVELS

This shows a list of levels that the server will be running and the order they

will run in. The current level is indicated with a black dot to the left of

the level name. Below the list of levels, there are three buttons which are

described below:

*Next Level: Go to the next level immediately without having to wait for

the level ending conditions to be met.

*Select Level: Go to the currently highlighted level immediately without having

to wait for the level ending conditions to be met.

You can also just double click the level.

*Stop Server: This will stop the server and close NolfServ.

CONSOLE

This shows a scrolling display of the server's internal commands and status.

Chat messages from players will also appear here. To send players messages from

the command line interface at the bottom, precede the message with "say" and

enclose the message in quotes. For instance if you entered: say "hello

everyone!" all clients would see the message "hello everyone!" from "Host".

Advanced users can enter Lithtech console commands in this command line.

To clear the display entirely, click the Clear button.

ADVANCED SERVER: For advanced server setup, the following commands are available:

*LeashLen: Specifies the allowable distance between the client's position

and where the server thinks the client should be. Defaults to 2.0.

*LeashSpring: Specifies the distance inside of which the server will

interpolate the server's position to match the client's position.

Outside of this distance, the server's position will be forced to

the client's position. Defaults to 150.0.

*LeashSpringRate: Defines how quickly the interpolation will happen between the

server and client positions, in the range 0.0-1.0. Lower numbers

lead to slower interpolation. (Which gives smoother movement,

but greater error.) 0.0 will stay at the server's position, and

1.0 will teleport the server object to the client's position.

The default value is 0.1.

DAMAGE ICONS

When a player takes damage from the various ammo types in NOLF, a damage icon

will appear along the left had side of the screen. Damage from specialized

ammunition can be countered by various gear items available in the game. NOTE:

The ammo icon displayed in the manual has changed slightly. The new icon is

a red blood drop.

WEAPON AND GADGET KEY BINDING

Under Options/Controls/Weapon Hotkeys, you can bind the weapons and gadgets

of their choice to number keys 1 through 0. Icons for these items will

then show up along the right hand side of the screen. A number will appear

within each icon corresponding to the key number. If you do not possess

a weapon or gadget, then that icon will not appear on the screen. Because

of the huge number of weapons and gadgets in the game, some people prefer to

rebind every few missions. Others prefer to bind only gadgets to each key.

The choice is yours.

HARDWARE CURSOR

Under Options/Display you can select Hardware Cursor on or off. On means that

the cursor is not bound to the game's framerate which in most cases means

it is much smoother and easier to use throughout the game's menus. However, many

cards do not support a hardware cursor, even those that claim they do.

ADDITIONAL GAME OPTIONS

Under Options/Game, there are several additional options not included in the

manual.

*Head bob: Sets the amount the screen will bob as you move.

*Weapon sway: Sets the amount your weapon will sway naturally when you move.

*Pickup message duration: This option will set how long the pick-up messages

appear on your screen.

MUSIC FILES ON DISK 2:

There's some groovy 60's tunes that can found on Disk 2. Simply enable your

media/audio player before starting No One Lives Forever and then insert Disk

2 once the application is within the Main Menu.

III. NOTES ON COMPATIBILITY

________________________________

FUNCTIONALITY

No One Lives Forever is designed to function with Windows 95/98/2000/

ME-compatible graphics and sound cards. Drivers for these various devices are

provided by Windows itself or the respective card manufacturers and may

occasionally result in compatibility problems beyond our control.

If you experience any problems, it is always recommended that you obtain the

latest drivers for your hardware. Driver updates resolve the overwhelming

majority of compatibility issues. Most hardware vendors make their drivers

available on their web site. If you are unsure of a web site URL for a

particular hardware vendor, you may want to try accessing one of the popular

Windows software update sites such as http://www.windrivers.com. Additionally,

a brief list of the chipset and board manufacturer web sites appears below for

your reference.

IV. KNOWN ISSUES

______________________

WINDOWS 2000:

A problem with Microsoft's DirectInput may cause mouse or keyboard functions to

keep repeating when the keys or buttons are pressed in conjunction with other

buttons. Striking the "stuck" key or button again should cause the function to

stop repeating. Microsoft has released a service pack to fix this bug which is

available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows.

Striking the Shift key five times may cause the 'Stick Key' feature to become

enabled in Windows 2000. If this happens, a computer will task switch to a

desktop dialogue box with options related to the feature, including one to

disable it entirely.

Under Windows 2000 when running at a 256 color desktop resolution, No One Lives

Forever will minimize and nothing happens. User must "End Task" to quit

application. This can be corrected by making sure that your desktop color is

set to 16-Bit or higher.

When installing No One Lives Forever, if Microsoft CD-Player is enabled

on the System Tray/Taskbar, inserting Disk 2 during installation may initiate

the Microsoft CD-Player automatically due to audio files being detected on this disk.

This will interfere with the installation process of No One Lives Forever and

errors may occur once installation is complete.

*To correct this, simply right click on the CD-Player icon located at the

bottom right hand corner and select exit before installing No One

Lives Forever. It's highly recommended to disable any media player

software from the System Tray/Taskbar before installing No One Lives

Forever.

WINDOWS 9x:

After quitting the game No One Lives Forever, starting another application or game,

will bring up an Explorer error and then a msgserv error.

*This error has to do with the D3D API and is common on D3D games.

We've looked at this and it seems like it is related to D3D code.

DirectX(r) 8 may resolve this issue.

GRAPHICS:

TEXT ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS ON THE MENUS: Some cards may display the menu text out

of alignment. While we have done what we can to address this, the problem will

need to be corrected through driver updates from the board manufacturers.

*Please check your board manufacturer's web site for the latest drivers.

This is seen with the ATI Radeon, RAGE 128 Chipsets, and Savage Chipsets.

MISSING CURSOR ON THE MENUS: This problem can occur on several different cards

and may be fixed by a driver update. In addition, because some cards do not

support a hardware cursor such as the one used in No One Lives Forever, you

have the option to disable the hardware cursor via the Advanced Options button

from the game launcher.

*Simply select "Disable Hardware Cursor" and you will

be provided with a software cursor.

PROBLEM ADJUSTING CURSOR COLOR: If adjusting the cursor colors is causing No

One Lives Forever to crash, please change your screen bit depth to 32-bit

(e.g. 800x600x32) If you want, after you adjust your cursor color, you can then

change back to 16-bit. We are currently working with nVidia to determine the

source of the driver issue.

INTRO MOVIES PLAYING AT LOW FRAME RATES: This problem occurs with the following cards:

Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo 2/3/4/5. Simply hit the left mouse button to bypass movies.

Future updates from 3Dfx may reslove this issue.

CORRUPTED MIRRORS: In some rare instances, mirrors in the game may appear

corrupted.

*Changing to a 32-bit desktop screen mode should resolve the

problem.

CORRUPTED GRAPHICS IN THE MENUS WITH THE SAVAGE CHIPSET, ATI ALL-IN-WONDER CHIPSETS

AND ATI RAGE 128 CHIPSET CARDS: Turning down all display settings in No One Lives Forever to

the lowest settings will help remedy this issue.

*Also it can only be corrected via a future driver update.

ATI ALL-IN-WONDER/PRO: We have found that running NO ONE LIVES FOREVER with the drivers that

ship with the video card is more stable compared to the newer drivers that are currently

available.

*ATI will address this issue with a future driver update.

CORRUPTED GRAPHICS WITH THE MATROX CHIPSET CARDS: This problem occurs rarely.

*This problem can usually be fixed by choosing 16 Bit, rather than 32 Bit, color mode.

CORRUPTED GRAPHICS DURING GAMEPLAY USING VOODOO BANSHEE CHIPSET CARDS: This

problem seems to occur most frequently on Windows 2000 systems.

*Lowering the detail setting will most likely resolve the problem.

Future driver updates will also reduce this effect.

VOODOO 3: There are no visible chrome effects seen on walls even though

everything is turned up in the performance menu, the walls in The Assigment

training level don't have any shining or chroming effects.

*Environment mapping and Detail texturing are not supported on the Voodoo3.

VOODOO 5: Mild to severe discoloration can sometimes occur with the Voodoo 5

when using the two or four pass anti-aliasing modes.

*In the launcher under Advanced Options, type "+S3TCEnable 0" into the

command line and check the "Always use these settings" box.

This should correct the problem.

VOODOO 5: May experience a split-screen effect while quitting the game.

*This a hardware issue with the video card switching from the D3D renderer to the Desktop.

This will not affect Desktop settings.

VIA CHIPSETS: Major Graphic Dropout in Menus, Poor Game Performance.

*Download the latest 4 in 1 drivers and video display drivers to correct these issues.

The 4 in 1 driver can be obtained at the following link:

http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm

AMD CHIPSETS: Major Graphic Dropout in Menus, Poor Game Performance.

*Download the AGP Miniport and latest driver pack from the AMD website at:

http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/bin/

TNT/TNT2/GEFORCE: Load Screens may appear corrupted when using a high resolution

setting 1600x1200.

RIVA 128 CHIPSETS: Alpha Blend Issues

*There are a number of rendering issues on the Riva128

which are due to a combination of hardware and driver issues which result

in occasionally strange graphic anomalies particularly with Alpha blending.

ASUS (TNT/GeForce) DRIVERS ISSUE: When the user plays the Co-Op level "Storm" with the retail

driver provided by ASUS, the game will kick the user out to the desktop.

This only happen on this level and all the other Co-Op levels are fine.

*Using the Detonator 3 Drivers from Nvidia will correct this. Also a

future driver update from ASUS may correct this issue.

TNT/GEFORCE CARDS NOT DISPLAYING IN-GAME FOG: Make sure that "Enable Fog Table

Emulation" is checked. This option can be found in Control Panel, Double Click

the "Display" icon, click on the "Settings" tab, click on the "Advanced"

button, click on the TNT/Geforce tab, click on the "Additional Properties"

button, and click on the "Direct3D Settings" tab.

SOUND:

SOUNDBLASTER AWE 32/64 PCI: There's a rare issue of sound choppiness

and drop out.

*Make sure you have the latest driver from your sound card

manufacturer and check for device conflicts.

SOUNDCARD IS NOT BEING DETECTED OR DISABLED:

Subtitles will not appear in the game if you do not have a soundcard, if your

soundcard is not detected or if you have disabled your soundcard.

PERIPHERALS:

INTELLIMOUSE EXPLORER/OPTICAL PS2 ADAPTER: Additional mouse buttons are not being detected.

*If you're using the PS2 adapter for this mouse, NOLF can only use the left mouse

button, middle/wheel button, and right mouse button. The two side (Additional)

buttons will only be detected if the latest intellipoint drivers are used and connected

directly into the USB port.

DEVICES:

CD-ROM: When playing multiplayer using Minimum Install, the application constantly seeks

the CD/DVD ROM causing lag.

*Make sure that the Supplemental Cache Size for the CD-ROM is set to Full and that the

Optimize Access Pattern is set to "Quad Speed or Higher". You can access these

features within the Control Panel and double clicking the System icon. This will bring

up the System Properties Screen. At this point select the "Performance" tab and click

on "File System" located near the bottom left hand corner. This will bring up the

"File Systems Properties" menu. Now select the "CD-ROM" tab and this is where the changes

can be made. It's also recommended that a 32X or faster CD/DVD ROM should be used when

playing Multiplayer using a minimum install.

V. FIXES AND ADDITIONS

___________________________

* Fixed a potential crash on exit bug as well as crashes that

sometimes occur when moving between Singleplayer and

Multiplayer.

* Fixed memory fragmentation issues which may have caused

crashes and slow downs after playing for long periods of time.

* Fixed a bug where the player inventory was not always saved

correctly after being knocked out. This insures if you go back to

play a level, that you have all available weapons/gadgets that you

have collected.

* Added the ability to review Intelligence items you have collected

via a new Intelligence Gallery (by popular request!).

* Fixed a bug in single player where shooting an unalert enemy

twice, even with silenced weapons, could alert other AI in the

vicinity to your presence. This bug was making stealth missions

more difficult than intended. In this update, silenced shots which

hit and kill an unalert AI never alert other AI in the area making

stealth easier and more intuitive for many players.

* Fixed a bug that allowed the coin to fall through many surfaces in

the game, thereby making it impossible for the player to retrieve.

This bug should be 100% fixed on flat surfaces, but the coin may

still "trickle down" certain ramps and disappear.

* Fixed an unreachable Intelligence item on the space station,

which prevented players from getting a perfect score in every

level.

* The Body Remover can now be mapped to a weapon hotkey.

* Changed the "Always Run" Toggle to toggle default movement

(Run or Walk) and changed the "Run" key to toggle the opposite

of the default. This will allow players who choose "walk" as

their default movement mode to run when the button is held

down, and vice-versa. The names of these controls in the

options menu have also been changed for clarity. "Run" is now

"Toggle run/walk", and "Run/walk toggle" has been changed to

"Toggle Always Run."

* Added better caching of weapon special fx to cut down on

stuttering (e.g. when hit by a cyanide bullet, game pauses while

loading floating goats).

* Added more informative "Disconnected from Server" messages.

* Fixed a bug where double clicking on the arrows to scroll

through available servers in the multiplayer "join" menu would

join the server that's currently highlighted.

* Added the server's IP address and version number to the game

option section of the multiplayer "join" menu.

* Fixed a bug that allows low ping players to photograph Intelligence

items multiple times.

* Fixed a multiplayer bug that sometimes caused a player's armor

display to not show up correctly.

* Fixed a bug that allows low ping players to score multiple kills

when they run over someone on the snowmobile or motorcycle.

* Added a dialogue box that appears when a player attempts to

join a server that's running a different version of the game.

* A "View Options" command has been added to multiplayer

escape menu. This will allow clients to see all of the current

server's settings.

* Added a dialog box to indicate that a server is no longer available.

This will come up when you try to join a server that has been shut

down since the last time you used the "refresh server" option.

* Fixed a bug where players in a multiplayer game could use the

Escape key to "Teleport" across the map after grabbing a weapon

or powerup.

* Attempted to fix game freezes with players using the Diamond

MX300 (Aureal Vortex2 Chipset). Unfortunately, we have

determined this is a DirectX and/or driver issue. We're working

with Microsoft on a solution. In the meantime, players who

encounter this bug can still play the game by turning off

DirectMusic in the Advanced options section of the launcher.

* Chat text in multiplayer now word-wraps.

* Other long messages now also word wrap.

* Fixed bug with Weapon Stay weapons only giving you the

default ammo (not the ammo specified by the level designer).

* Updated weapon powerups so you can pick up the ammo in them

(if you run out of that ammo type) even if you have the weapon.

We'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those gamers who are

helping each other by answering support questions on the forum,

particularly those hard to track down hardware and driver issues

that plague all PC games!
