Day of Defeat: Source - High-res replacement skin fo Axis model
This is a High resolution replacement skin for the axis soldier in
Day of Defeat: Source. It is TWICE the size of the default skins so
make sure your computer can handle it. It has been running smoothly
on an ATI 9700 pro that is 3 years old so any modern video cards
should have no problems.
I made this skin to depict as accurately as possible a mid to late
war ensemble. There were literally dozens upon dozens of different
uniforms used by the German armed forces and they wre mixed and
matched in all kinds of configurations, so no one style is "correct".
I went with the most universally recognized style, and I kept it
Wermacht (Army), not Waffen SS.
I must say I was a bit dissapointed with the default sins in DOD:S.
The player model skins were a bit under-detailed, even at the default
size of 1024 x 1024. There were also a few texture mapping mistakes
made. I started off with the intention to simply correct these mistakes
and and some small details, but that soon balloned intointo a much
larger project, the result of which you see now.
* skin corrections
- corrected bad texture alignment on bottom of canteen
- corrected right front Y-strap buckle missing due to being mapped
to a neutral gray spot on the skin
- corrected numerous mis-alignments between model edges and skin
* model issues that cannot be corrected with the skin
- Tunic collar is a style never made in WW2 Germany. This really messes
up placing collar insignia properly. After looking at it a long
time I decided the modeller was going for the "open collar" look
often seen in WW2 pictures, unfortunately he shaped the lapels
like a modern military jacket would look
- The MP44 magazine pouches have a single flap covering all 3
magazines. I have looked high and low and have yet to find any
proof this ammo pouch was made during WW2. Even if I am wrong
and it was a real item, It very obviously was not the most common
version.
- The game has you using a Walther P-38 pistol; the holster on the
model is a very obvious Luger P-08 holster.
* other items of note
- all mess kits were gray-green after 1943
- boots were always brown, soldiers had to make them black. Boot
blackening was discontinued in 1943 and boot black was no longer
issued
- I purposely mixed and matched old and new items (i.e. some items
look old and worn and some look almost new)
- I originally made the MG bullets with a transparency but it was
causing issue withthe Source engine so I wimped out and camoflauged
those areas with the same texture as the gray tunic.
- I purposely did not make him very dirty. Speaking from personal
experience, I have been a soldier all my life and I have not
been covered head to foot in charcoal and mud every second I was
out in the field. If you wanna dirty him up, knock yourself out.
Don't do a crappy job.
- Hair is not perfect, and I am done working on the model. Lighter
colored hair is too hard to make match up at the seams (there is
a reason modellers tend to make models with darker hair).
