I. WHAT IS THE WHEEL OF TIME SERVER CONFIGURATION UTILITY?
===========================================================================
There have been more than a few requests for a way to run a dedicated
multiplayer server without the Wheel of Time Disc Two in the CD-ROM drive.
This utility not only eliminates that requirement, but allows you to
specify options for your multiplayer server without having to launch the
Wheel of Time client.
This simple application features all the dedicated server options that are
contained in the game, as well as the ability to save different config-
urations as in order to easily revert to them later.
In addition, the utility allows you to set the server to automatically
restart if it terminates.
===========================================================================
II. HOW DO I INSTALL THE WHEEL OF TIME SERVER CONFIGURATION UTILITY?
===========================================================================
To install the Wheel of Time Server Configuration Utility, just follow
these steps:
1. Save this file (SETUP.EXE) to a temporary folder (e.g. C:\TEMP)
2. Navigate to the folder and find the SETUP.EXE file.
3. Double-click on SETUP.EXE.
4. You will see a window that says "Copying Files, Please Wait."
4a. If you have outdated Visual Basic runtimes the setup program may
ask to restart your computer so it can copy newer versions over your
older versions. When you do this, your computer will restart. When the
system returns to Windows, you will need to start the setup.exe again
in order to continue with the installation.
5. The next window is called "Wheel of Time Server Configuration Utility
Setup". Click on the "OK" button to continue.
6. The next window features a large icon and the folder where the program
will be installed. You can change this folder if you like, and put the
utility in a location of your choosing. When you are ready to proceed,
click on the computer icon.
7. The next window will prompt you for the Program Group in which you want
to place the shortcut. You can put it anywhere; the utility will
function the same. Click the "Continue" button to proceed.
8. SETUP.EXE will then begin copying the utility to the folder you
specified in step 6. When it is complete, you will see a message box
saying "Wheel of Time Server Configuration Utility Setup was completed
succesfully." Click the "OK" button to finish.
That's the last step. After this process is complete, you will have a
program group in your Windows Start Menu called "WoTServCon".
===========================================================================
III. HOW DO I USE THE WHEEL OF TIME SERVER CONFIGURATION UTILITY?
===========================================================================
Well, here's a description of every single option in the program:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
GLOBAL OPTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WoT Path - This should be set as your root Wheel oF Time directory; in
other words, it should say something like "C:\WheelOfTime",
and not "C:\WheelOfTime\Maps", or "C:\WheelOfTime\System".
Clicking on the ".." button to the right of the path will
open a window from which you can browse to your Wheel of
Time directory.
Name INI File - Allows you to save the current server configuration as a
.INI file, so you can quickly load it up later. The Arena
and Citadel configurations are separate, so if you want to
save both configurations, be sure to do this twice; once
with the Arena tab highlighted, and once with the Citadel
tab highlighted. By default, all Arena configurations are
saved as Arena.ini and all Citadel configurations are saved
as Citadel.ini.
Name log File - Allows you to name the SERVER.LOG file something
different, for easy reference later. The SERVER.LOG file
contains every action that the server performs: accepting
connections from players, respawning ter'angreal, etc.
Also, if the server terminates for any reason, the
SERVER.LOG file will give helpful information as to the
cause. By default, all Arena configurations are saved as
Arena.ini and all Citadel configurations are saved as
Citadel.ini.
Loop Server? - If this box is checked, the server will immediately restart
if/when it terminates.
Server Name - This is the name that players will see when using their
server browser. Don't worry about putting information
about the server in the name; players can also view the
server's settings in their browser.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ARENA OPTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Select Map - This drop-down menu lists all the Arena maps in
your \Maps directory. It is important to note,
however, that only files that conform to the
"Arena_##.wot" naming convention will be seen by
the utility.
Number of Kills to Win - Fairly self-explanatory. If this number is set to
0, then the multiplayer game will never end based
on kills. If this number is set to 0 AND the time
limit (see next) is set to 0, then the server will
continue forever.
Also, keep in mind that this option takes into
account the number of self-kills the player has in
the game. For instance, if a player has 20 kills,
7 deaths, and 2 self-kills, then his score will
only be 18. When he gets two more kills, his
score will increase to 20.
Time Limit - Self-explanatory. This is the time, in minutes,
that the server will run a particular map. When
the time limit is reached, regardless of the
standings, the server will either move to the next
map or restart the same map, depending on the next
option:
Cycle Arena Levels - If this is set to False, the server will reload
the same map when the ending conditions (see above)
are met. If it is set to True, the utility will
cycle through all the maps in your \Maps directory
that conform to the "Arena_##.wot" naming convention,
in sequential order.
Player Count Limit - If there are this many players logged into the
server, then no more players will be able to join.
Max Client Frame Rate - This is a very important option, if you want to
play on the server you're running. If this number
is set to 0, you will not be able to join the game
from the same computer on which the server is
running.
Admin Password - If this is left blank, no one will be able to
obtain administrator privileges on the server. If
it is set to something, any player will be able to
type "adminlogin
" from the Wheel of
Time console to gain administrator privileges.
Game Password - If this is left blank, the game is completely
open. Anyone who wants to join, can join. If
this option is set to something, all players who
attempt to join will be prompted for a password in
order to do so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CITADEL OPTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Number of Citadels - This can be set to 2, 3, or 4; included with
the commercial version of Wheel of Time are five
(5) two-citadel maps, two (2) three-citadel
maps, and one (1) four-citadel map. The number
of citadels is, obviously, the number of teams.
Select Map - This menu is dependent on the number of citadels
selected. It will only show the maps available
to that number of citadels.
Time Limit - Self-explanatory. For more information, see the
description in the "ARENA OPTIONS" section.
Cycle Citadel Levels - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".
Number of Kills to Win - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".
Number of Seals to Win - The bare minimum number of seals to win is
the same as the number of citadels. However,
this number can be set as high as 4.
Seals Per Citadel - The minimum number here is 1, obviously, but it
can be set as high as 3.
Automatic Team Selection - When this is set to False, the server will
assign teams based on the order of connection.
The first person to connect to the server will
be placed on the first team, the second person
will be placed on the second team, the third
will be placed on the first team, and so on.
If it is set to True, when players join the
server, they will have the option of choosing
which team they want to join.
Player Count Limit - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".
However, in a Citadel game, if the player count
limit is set higher than the number of citadels
multiplied by the maximum team size (see below),
then other players can join the game. They just
won't be able to join a team. They will be
translucent spectators who can watch the game.
Maximum Team Size - Self-explanatory. See the description preceding
this one for more information.
Max Client Frame Rate - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".
Admin Password - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".
Game Password - See the above description in "ARENA OPTIONS".

IV. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE UTILITY?
===========================================================================
Well, here are some tips and hints:
1. Some multiplayer maps are bigger, and some are MUCH bigger, than others.
A common practice around the Legend offices is to set up servers that
only cycle through big maps, or small maps. In order to do this, you
need to create separate maps folders. For instance, if you want to run
a server with only small maps, move all the big maps to a separate
folder named "BigMaps", and leave the small ones in the original "Maps"
folder. This is a good idea if you know you're only going to have two
or three players, and you don't want to spend the whole game trying to
find them.
2. More players means more information that the server has to process. If
you want to run a 16-player, four-team Citadel game, then performance is
bound to suffer somewhat. In this example, the server has to load four
distinct sets of textures, in addition to all the ter'angreal in the
map. Finding a balance between performance and diversity is a tough
process.
3. Keep in mind when starting Citadel servers, that if you wish to cycle
through levels, the server will cycle through ALL citadel levels. This
means that if you are running a three citadel server, when the two
citadel maps (battle3_01 and battle3_02) have been cycled through, the
server will then load battle4_01 and then back to battle2_01 and so on.
If your server is configured for a three citadel game (with appropriate
seal counts and victory conditions) then the server might not behave
correctly in citadel maps that are not designed for three citadels.
We suggest that you only keep the citadel maps that you want to cycle
through in your \Maps directory (moving the others to a differently
named directory as explained in #1 above).
