Download Complete: Sharing the Digital Love
The Sobig Virus has been kicking virtual butts all over the Internet. This nasty little virus is the worst mass-mailing virus to date, causing major headaches for ISPs, system administrators, and a gazillion individuals who have been buried under an avalanche of infected e-mails. I haven't seen too many infected e-mails thanks to real-time virus scanning vigilance, but I got smacked with a ton rejection messages as mail servers and anti-virus software bounced e-mails back to me. I am apparently the poster child for spoofed e-mail addresses (one of the drawbacks of having your e-mail address on the front page of one of the largest websites in gaming). There are about 10,000 unwanted e-mails heading to my clogged in-box each and every day now.
Despite this crush of bad e-mails, my in-box is once again the clean, pristine home of only the most important new letters. All of the trash is being pre-filtered by my new favorite Outlook plugin: SpamBayes. This sweet little plugin is a Bayesian anti-spam filter that you can train to remove only unwanted Spam. It only took a few minutes of configuring and "training" for SpamBayes to correctly filter 99% of the crap. I learned about SpamBayes from a friend. I was bemoaning my pitiful state to Tungsten, the big cheese behind GameSpy Arcade, and he recommended the free plugin that saved my sanity. This is not the first time that I've tried a killer application based on a friend's recommendation. That's how I discovered GameSpy 3D, WinAmp, ICQ, and most of the other vital applications that have lived on my hard drive for years innumerable. I'm a big believer in word-of-mouth advertising, so I've done my part to extol the virtues of my favorite apps to anyone who will listen. When I find a great program these days, however, I immediately add the shareware version to FilePlanet. Do You? Are there any software masterpieces that you would like more people to try? Submit them to FilePlanet and we will take care of the rest. Are there categories of software we are missing? Let us know! Guess the Number, Win a Prize This Week: E-mail has been a little wonky for many readers, so I'll give everyone another week on the latest contest. Battlefield 1942 has been blessed with some outstanding and popular Modifications. Desert Combat alone is more popular than most retail games. Do you think you know how popular Battlefield Mods are? I'll give a free month of the FilePlanet Subscription for the closest guess to the number of downloads from the Battlefield 1942 Mods section. Send in your guess and you could win big. -- |
