Review of PC Gaming New for 2009

December 30, 2009

It was wild roller coaster ride for PC gaming industry in 2009 after riding a monster wave of successful year in 2008. The last year had no shortages of PC gaming news with lots of good news and unfortunates events. The result was some biggest and most shocking gaming news in the last decade. Here are some of the memorable moments of 2009.

Gaming Industry Gets Hit With A Massive Axe

With rough economic times, the gaming industrial got clocked and many places got closed down for good. EA let go of several teams and studios including the EA LA team working on Command & Conquer 4 before it is even finished and parts of the Maxis team. Microsoft closed down Ensemble Studios which scrapped any potential for a Halo MMORPG or Age of Empires sequels. Gaming media companies weren't immune as Electronic Gaming Monthly almost took a dive when 1UP and Ziff Davis Media went belly up and then picked up by UGO. Gamers went into frenzy over their gaming files when FileFront threaten to close down on April 1st teasing users with a bad joke.

iD Software, Eidos and Midway Get New Owners

While some studios got closed, several giants ones were just bought. Iconic Midway Games that published Mortal Kombat and Unreal Tournament games was sold for a mere $100,000 and had $70 million in debt. ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda, rich from the success of Fallout 3 became the owner of iD Software, the creators behind the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein series. Square Enix picked up Eidos which means Lara Croft might be in a RPG in the future.

Duke Nukem Forever RIP

After twelve years of teasing gamers with trailers and tidbits of Duke Nukem, 3D Realms and Take-Two Interactive finally announced Duke Nukem Forever will be on on an extended smoking break at the gentlemens club. The two partners entered a back and forth legal battle and made salacious accusations as hardcore fans cried in sorrow. Maybe the name was the curse because everyone will be waiting for Duke Nukem Forever. Here are several notable accomplishments in the history of mankind that took less than twelve years to complete to put the fail boat into perspective. The Duke Nukem Forever saga still continues...

FilePlanet Turns 10 Years Old.

FilePlanet reached a magical milestone being around for a magical 10 years. To celebrate FilePlanet had an awesome secret discount subscriber offering worthy of the milestone and Ferret wrote a legendary FileBlog on the History of FilePlanet. FilePlanet plans to be around for another decade. We're excited about our place in this industry and we have big plans for the future.

E3 2009 Marks The Return of E3 to Classic Form

E3 2009 came back with a bang after a disappointing and very empty 2008 E3 show. Gamers were able to walk the convention floors in LA and enjoy the most famous gaming expo once again. It was back to collecting swaging, play games and taking pictures with hot booth babes. There were great titles on display and some landmark news at E3. There was awesome news with a display of Alan Wake on the Xbox 360 showing it wasn't vapourware. Final Fantasy XIV was announced to be an MMORPG by Square Enix. Project Natal from Microsoft was in full action. Can you imagine playing a FPS game on Project Natal! Talk about a revolutionary change to gaming.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Enters Guinness Book of World Records

Batman: Arkham Asylum was one of the most anticipate games of the year. The Dark Knight video game gained tons of new fans with recent Batman movies and they were all waiting to be Bruce Wayne's alter ego. This game didn't disappoint and players got use Batman's great gadgets and capture some of the famous villains with spine tingling combat. Arkham Asylum entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the Best Rated Superhero game. If you haven't played the full game, then download the Batman: Arkham Asylum Demo and try it out.

Onlive Plans To Provide a PC Streaming Gaming Service

In a completely futuristic pipedream for PC gaming, OnLive announced it intends to provide an on-demand gaming service that streams high end PC games without requiring any expensive or complicated hardware. While the idea has tons of potential, it might have to wait a few years. Most PC hardware is so cheap it cost only $500-700 for a decent rig to play PC games and the idea requires more network bandwidth than Skynet could ever dream of. It requires a solid 5 Mbps connection for 720p HD gaming but what about the lag? When Onlive goes live look for terminators to take over.

StarCraft, Bioshock, and other PC titles are delayed to 2010

Many developers and publishers decided to push their games back to 2010 in hopes of greener days. While it is a smart business move on their part it left my PC gamers salivating for titles like Singularity, Bioshock 2, StarCraft, Blur, Diablo 3, Alien vs. Predator, Splinter Cell Conviction, Brink, and more. Most of them are releasing on Q1 2010 which means GPAs and work productivity will be dropping across the globe.

Aion, Champions Online, and Fallen Earth Rule The MMORPG Landscape

These three MMORPGs were the most successful and critically applauded MMORPGs titles of the year. If you noticed FilePlanet had several betas and trials for all of three of these titles, so you probably aren't surprise on how good are these MMOs. If you missed out on the fun you can try a free trial for Champions Online or purchase the full version of Aion and Fallen Earth on Direct2Drive. If you are tired of WoTLK and conquered the latest WoW IceCrown Citadel then give these MMOs a spin for a change.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Rules The World but Loses An Eye In The Process

Modern Warfare 2 dominated sales chart opening for a record breaking 5 millions units sold in just one day. It made Activision $550 million dollars for the biggest opening week for any media product. This wasn't with controversy with many PC gamers up in arms over Infinity Ward's decision to remove Dedicated Servers, ability to play mods, and limited to 9on9 multiplayer battles. Can't they round up to an even 10 Vs 10! Infinity Ward bundled it with STEAM to the dismay of Activision causing several retailers not to sell the product. The game ended up being the most pirated PC game to a tune of 4 million copies.
