Pumpkin Awards - Day #5: The Final Picks
October 30, 2009
Welcome to the final part of our week filled with scary games where we pick out the spookiest titles to grace our PCs and grand them our coveted Pumpkin Award fro 2009. Today, classic horror and the final selection...
Ghost of the Past Award - Best Classic Horror
WINNER: SYSTEM SHOCK 2

Of all the creepy classics, none of freaked me out just like System Shock 2. Taking place on 2114 on a starship taken over by a rogue AI, this game created by Irrational games uses monstrosities, creepy audio tapes and the ships ambiance to create a frightening experience. The old demo is still available to those that dare try it out.
Runner-up: DOOM, Clive Barker's Undying, 7th Guest
WINNER: F.E.A.R.

This was not an easy pick; the most startling game had many different contenders for the win. But the one game that everybody selected in their list was F.E.A.R., so something about that creepy little bitch Alma floating across a hallway and fizzling lights spiked even the strongest FP Editor's heart rate. Check out the demo!
Runner-up: Call of Cthulhu, DOOM 3, Dead Space, Condemned 2

And Part #4 is here, the last part just around the creepy corner for our wicked Pumpkin Awards for 2009, where us editors eat your halloween candy and pick the scariest games of past and present. Today, demons and unexpected scares...
WINNER: DOOM 3

DOOM is a name that will live in infamy for years to come, and it's third iteration seriously upped the ante in the world of demon scares. From the treacherously floating cacodemon to the heart-pounding running from a cyberdemon DOOM 3 is a banquet of horny horror. Check out the DOOM 3 demo on FilePlanet and get a taste of the action.
Runner-up: Alone in the Dark, Classic DOOM, Jericho
WINNER: HELLO KITTY ONLINE

Sometimes it's not the game itself that's scary, but the obsession behind the game - and such is the case with the Hello Kitty phenomenon. From candy, wallets, purses and bullet shaped back massagers the hallmark kitten has taken a world by cutesy storm. I ask you then, how is Hello Kitty Online not a scary homage to that insanity.
Runner-up: Catch the Sperm 2, The Typing of the Dead
ON FRIDAY: It's all over...

The White Chamber is a cool anime-style free game created by Studio Trophis. Using 24-bit graphics and hand drawn cut-scenes a lot of blood and care went into its creation, and I'll bet you a ghoul spleen you've never even heard of it. You can download it and play it now on FilePlanet, also check out the runner-up titles.

Zombies are the hot topic lately, and the games list including zombies has grown exponentially throughout the years, but Left 4 Dead brings the head-exploding genre home with its intricate level design and cooperative survival gameplay. WINNER: PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES

Typically when zombies are present, it's time to find the nearest ammo store and get locked and loaded - however with the Plants in Plants vs. Zombies this is hardly necessary as you mearly plant row by row of brain-defending plants. Who couldn't agree that a cornstalk is an unlikely hero? Oh, and now some awesome gardening news - get Plants vs. Zombies FREE if you subscribe to FilePlanet today!
Runner-up: Jericho (Arnold Leach)

Nothing is more frightening then murderous children, and Alma is queen of that gaming category. Today, sinister cities and infested spaceships...
WINNER: SILENT HILL

A most disturbing piece of real-estate inhabited with distorted nurses, Pyramid Head and blood-splatter bunny suits - the only thing likely to be raised in Silent Hill is Hell itself. Based around the series of the same name, Silent Hill is notorious for making even those with stronger constitutions jump a little. You can get a taste with several demos on FilePlanet including Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4.
Runner-up: BioShock (Rapture), Fatal Frame II (Haunted Village).
WINNER: DEAD SPACE

An alien infestation not for the squeamish, Isaac Clarke battles slice by bloody slice aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura. A recent contender in the arena having launched only October last year, Dead Space and it's over the shoulder perspective and terrifying Necromorphs easily take the award.
