Section 8 + New Patch
One of the best things about working at FilePlanet is getting in on all the great betas we run. The last few months have been so busy with betas though, that we've taken to informally calling it the "summer of betas." There's been something for everyone – strategy gamers, MMO fanatics, casual game fans and of course, a few goodies for FPS people like me like Section 8. I mean you get to drop 15,000 feet from space and if you're really really good you get to actually drop on someone's head. What's not to love?

The weird thing is that the longer I work here, the more I'm enjoying playing in betas more than a finished product. Yeah, you might have to deal with bugs or unbalanced gameplay or limited playtest schedules but the rewards far outweigh the drawbacks. The biggest of these is simply the opportunity to really become part of the development process. If you think you're never being heard by developers just posting on message boards, here's a little secret: the best chance you have to affect the course of game development is BEFORE the game comes out - in a beta.

Case in point: the same Section 8 beta. They just put out a patch that fixes a TON of issues I and other beta testers have been having in the game. They've enabled bot support on servers, they fixed a bunch of gameplay crashes and put in a bunch of gameplay tweaks and balances. My personal favorite is that they've jacked up the penetrating power of the shotgun which finally gives that sadly underpowered weapon some oomph. If you haven't tried it, why not get in today?
