FilePlanet's 10 Year Anniversary - Part #3

May 08, 2009

In our final leg of the Anniversary blog of FilePlanet we're going to cover our current staffers, with now over 10 years of File Delivery experience our staff has grown, but surprisingly not by much! Handling files as big as 20 gigs, we've come a long way from our heyday - but our heart is still in the same place.

But before we get to the pictures, hey - no scrolling yet. A trip down the FilePlanet history wouldn't be complete without mentioning the games we've helped through our betas and demos. Starting from the early years of Asheron's Call and World of Warcraft, listing them out would take a full Fileblog in itself. But here are a few highlights, see if you remember playing these: PlanetSide, Desert Combat, Ryzom, Tribes: Vengeance, Battlefield 2142, Battlefront II, The Matrix Online, Dungeon Siege II, F.E.A.R., Dungeons & Dragons Online, Supreme Commander, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online.

We're going to finish this series of blogs with pictures of the current team. Remember to send in your trivia question answers (Not many have answered yet, so you have a good chance of winning - check Part #2 for the questions!):

VirginMary, always festive VP of Fun.

The crazy KarateGirl with our new Angry Bear.

Killroy rocking out.

Hi(ee and her husband.

Ricecrispi, the one in glasses.

ToughCookie on a memorable day.

Me.

Thanks for following along, be sure to read Part #1 and Part #2 if you missed them!

FilePlanet's 10 Year Anniversary - Part #2

May 07, 2009

So yesterday we covered the launch of FilePlanet that happened 10 years and 1 day ago, FilePlanet has undergone much iteration during that period. Being a part of the GameSpy and Planet Network - FilePlanet going "Green" has absolutely nothing to do with saving the earth, not that that we don't love fuzzy animals. Picture Below:

Early beta programs on FilePlanet included Desert Combat, Final Fantasy XI, The Sims Online and Steam (Yes, Steam). Popular files were Counter-Strike, Desert Combat, and DoA Extreme Beach Volleyball Gameplay videos. In an effort to get bigger, better and more blue - we launched a new FilePlanet in 2004. You can see a picture below. Following are a few people that have made FilePlanet possible over the past years:

-----------------------

Dakota, looking surly.

Radium pretending to be an elephant.

Knower, when we delivered files by van.

Thrrpppt drinking. Yes, we see the feather.

That wraps up today's blog, tomorrow we'll cover our current FilePlanet team. But before we go, we have some 5 different questions about classic FilePlanet for our audience. Those that can answer all 5 of these questions correctly will be gifted a special prize, just simply e-mail me or respond on the forums with the answer!

1. What game series was FilePlanet founded on?
2. Which file is the most downloaded EVER on FilePlanet?
3. What is the earliest file still existing on FilePlanet?
4. What was the first Beta on FilePlanet that we gave out keys for?
5. Name one of two people who were hired in August 1999...

FilePlanet's 10 Year Anniversary

May 06, 2009

10 years is a long time. In a marriage it's typically gifted with diamonds because "A marriage that lasts ten years is durable and beautiful as a diamond". Yes, that's sappy. I'm not saying we're beautiful, but you better believe durable - we've been roundhouse punching files in the face since 1999 and we'll be seeing you on our 20th Anniversary in 2019 (sans the world ending in 2012). This brings us to the first step of the FilePlanet journey, an e-mail by Fragmaster with an idea about Quake 2 files:

Tue Nov 25 20:26:10 1997
From: Fragmaster
To: "Administrators"
Subject: Quake2: Push Baby, Push!

Fargo and Basty were just mentioning their big Quake2 push. And I have an idea. Don't read on if you're easily offended, I'm about to use the f-word: FILES.

Anybody remember dweomer's plan for FTP This! ? It was basically a web interface over cdrom.com's Quake files. However, it was too massive and too much work, and it never really got off the ground.

BUT right now THERE ARE NO QUAKE2 FILES. We can get in on the ground floor (we also have Joost, which helps). I'm thinking of doing something like CG's Vault, with pop-up windows possibly and descriptions on each file. Altho it would probably be written in SQL\ASP instead of CG's slow CGI\Perl. As well as something more organized, searchable, more newbie-friendly, and better looking than cdrom.com.

We *need* to get this going. This is our weakest area and we could make it our strongest. Look at CG: it wouldn't have ANY hits if it didn't have the Vault. Files rule. We must get started now or we won't be doing it. PlanetQuake must be the place to go for ALL THINGS QUAKE. Not just hosted sites and features.

Over a year later, an idea had become a reality and a baby FilePlanet was born weighing in at 9,000 files, most of which were Quake. The crew that made this all possible were Zues, Taskmaster, Mattfox, Fargo, Shaithis, Bryan, Midnight, KeyGrip, Moltar, Gary, Dakota, Dweomer, Centurion, Radium, Andrea, Michael, Darx, Alison, Dana, Chris, and many others. The original main staff manning the artillery was Radium, Knower, Drayc and our very own ToughCookie - the last standing member of the original crowd still here at FilePlanet. Below is a picture of one of the original FilePlanet logos, and the launch e-mail sent by Fargo:

Subject: FilePlanet Goes Live!

Hi all!

A lot of you have heard about this project for a LONG time and I only wish we could've launched it sooner, because it's a very important part of the network. At last, it's finally here!

http://www.fileplanet.com

Check that sucker out. It's got over 9000 files listed, which is a pretty damn good start. A huge thanks to all of you who helped us create this, we involved tons of people from the community.

FilePlanet is what a shared resource, like GameSpyder, which means we built it for all of the network to use. The biggest way it'll help is with inserts on the main network pages -- PlanetQuake will have ours up soon so you can check that out. It'll dynamically list the newest or most popular files from any section for you. We'll work with every network site individually to help you get something up and running on your site.

Meanwhile, please announce FilePlanet in your news. We think it's an awesome resource. If you need anything, mail me at Fargo@planetquake.com!

Thanks!

-Fargo

Although there were earlier versions of FilePlanet, most people will be most familiar with this gold site shown below when it truly started to gain its popularity. A team of rabid file monkeys were hired to populate the network, with bananas only fed to those that posted more then 300 a day.

Then in August 2001 we introduced our "Personal Servers" which gained steady popularity with their insane download speeds. We even had a page of testimonials for those that had purchased the service, and the price hasn't changed since that day, still 6.95 a month. Here is a snapshot of the personal servers back in the day:

That wraps up FilePlanet in its infancy, tomorrow we'll cover how it graduated into GameSpy colors then fell into its blue period. As a special tribute to our 10th Anniversary, we're offering an ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION for only 10 DOLLARS. Sorry, that had to be bolded; it's a super-awesome-once-in-a-lifetime-ferrets-rock type of deal. The deal has now ended, congrats to those that made it!
