What is the Download Manager?
The Download Manager is a utility provided to assist users in downloading files from FilePlanet. It offers the following features:
- Queued Files - Subscribers to FilePlanet and Founders' Club can have unlimited amounts of files queued up for an uninterrupted and easy downloading experience. If you are a registered user of FilePlanet, you can queue up 3 files at a time to be downloaded in the order that they are queued.
- Simultaneous Downloads - FilePlanet and Founders' Club subscribers can have 10 files downloading simultaneously! Registered users can only download one file at a time and use the 3-file queue for their download order.
- Resume Downloads - Loose connection and lost your download? Never fear! The Download Manager can resume file transfers! Just click the "retry" button on a disconnected download and resume your place immediately.
- Pause Downloads - Want to halt the download of one file to grab another? You can with the Download Manager pause feature. Stop the bandwidth coming in on one file to dedicate your connection to the latest demo, modification or movie that was just released!
- Manage Your Downloads - Use the Download Manager central interface to manage all your downloads effortlessly. Change the place of each file in the download queue, pause or resume downloads and categorize your completed files in the Files Complete history.
- PSP - Transfer your PlayStation Portable (PSP) movie files easily to your PSP using the Download Manager! Just download the PSP movie files you want to see and once it is finished downloading, easily transfer it to your PSP via USB connection with one simple click of a button.
Please note that the IGN Download Manager only works with FilePlanet. It will not interfere with downloads from other sites.

Transferring media files to the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)
The Download Manager is capable of transferring certain media files to a Sony PSP. Please note that not every file downloaded from FilePlanet can be transferred by the Download Manager. Only files with the [PSP Media] tag in their title, or which reside in the PSP section, can be transferred.
Connecting your PSP to your PC
Before you can transfer media files to your PSP, you need to connect your PSP to your PC using a USB cable. These cables can be purchased at most local electronic stores. For instructions on how to hook your PSP up to your PC, please see page 96 in the PSP user's manual. An electronic version of the manual can be found here.
Updating your PSP firmware
In order to ensure the best possible transfer experience between the Download Manager and your PSP, please make sure you have the latest PSP firmware update from Sony. You may download the latest firmware from here.
Obtaining PSP files from FilePlanet
FilePlanet provides a number of PSP compatible files which the Download Manager can automatically transfer to a connected PSP. The files are located in the PSP section on FilePlanet.
Manual Transfer Process
After downloading a PSP file from FilePlanet, a PSP icon will be displayed next to the download in the Download Manager.
Click the icon, or select "Transfer to PSP" from the right click context menu.
Wait for the file transfer to complete. Clicking the "Cancel" button will stop the transfer, but will not delete the file from your PC.
Once the transfer is complete, the transfer dialog will automatically close.
Automatic PSP Transfer
If you would like to have files transferred to the PSP automatically upon download completion, check the "Automatically transfer PSP files to a connected PSP on download" checkbox in the settings dialog.
Note: The transfer will only work if your PSP is connected to your PC, and the USB connectivity is set.
Error Messages
If an error occurs while transferring files to your PSP, the transfer dialog will display an error message like the following:
The following is a list of common errors, and their solutions:
- Unable to find PSP drive
This error indicates that the Download Manager could not detect an attached PSP to your computer. To resolve the problem, verify that your PSP is properly connected, then attempt to transfer the file again. - Not enough space on PSP
This error indicates that no memory stick is inserted into the attached PSP, or that the inserted memory stick does not have enough free space to store the file. If there is not enough free space on the memory stick, you will need to delete undesired files by navigating to them through the PSP menu, pressing the triangle button when the item is highlighted and select delete.

Want to give your downloads priority? Set your maximum downloads
As a FilePlanet subscriber, you have the option to increase the number of files that may be downloaded at any one time. The first method is using the Simply adjust the number of "Maximum concurrent downloads" in the options dialog. You may set this number to any value between one and ten. Once the value has been set, you can change the priority of your downloads by moving them up and down in the "Active Files" list.
If you are a registered FilePlanet user, but not a subscriber, the maximum number of files you may have active at a time remains at one.
Note: Lowering the "Maximum concurrent downloads" field to a value smaller than the number of current downloads will not effect the current downloads.
Troubleshooting
The Download Manager is not working properly! What should I try first?
In addition to reading through this help page (and the Download Manager FAQ), you should verify that your Download Manager has been patched to the latest version. To do so, simply run the Download Manager while your computer is connected to the internet. If a patch is available, the Download Manager will present you with the following dialog:
Select "Yes", and the patch will be automatically downloaded and applied.
I have installed the DLM, but when I go to download a file, my browser pops up a window saying "Unable to install the FilePlanet Download Control!".
Try the following:
- Verify that you are using a supported browser.
- If you are using Internet Explorer, verify that ActiveX controls are enabled.
- If you are using Netscape 8.0+, verify that you are in Firefox mode and not Internet Explorer mode.
- Clear all cookies in your web browser, and log back into FilePlanet.
My download failed. Is all the data I transferred lost? How can I resume the transfer?
A download can fail for various reasons, ranging from insufficient disk space to a loss of network connectivity. If any data was transferred before the error with the download occurred, that data was saved.
When an error occurs with a download, the download item is moved to the completed list with a failed state icon, as shown in this picture:
In order to resume a failed download, complete the following steps:
- Select the "Click here to retry" link on the failed download
- Select a new download mirror
- If the Download Manager is configured to prompt for a download location, select the same folder used in the failed transfer.
- [optional] Once the download has resumed, delete the failed entry in the completed list.
When clicking on ads or links in the newest 10 files list, Internet Explorer is opened instead of my default browser. How can I fix this?
If you are a Windows XP user, simply upgrade to Service Pack 2. Unfortunately, there is no fix for Windows 2000 users.
I am having problems starting downloads through Netscape 8.
Netscape 8 has two rendering modes: Firefox and Internet Explorer. When using the Download Manager through Netscape 8, the browser must be set to Firefox rendering mode. If the browser is configured to use Internet Explorer mode (the IE logo is shown on the bottom left of the screen), click on the IE icon and select "Display like Firefox", as shown in the following picture:
Please note that in Netscape 8, this setting is bound to the page being viewed. In order for this setting to work with FilePlanet, Firefox mode needs to be selected while viewing http://www.fileplanet.com.
I am a FilePlanet subscriber, but the Download Manager says I am not subscribed.
If you are a FilePlanet subscriber and the Download Manager is not giving you access to subscriber features, make sure you are logged into FilePlanet with your subscriber account, and that account was used to initiate the file transfer(s) from FilePlanet
Some large files take a long time to finalize/delete/execute. Why?
On some systems, large files may take a considerable amount of time to finalize, delete, or execute. This may result in the download manager processing certain downloads for long periods of time, as seen here:
While this scenario can result from a number of issues, the usual reason for long processing time in these states is an on-access virus scanner such as Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee Virus Scan. On-access virus scanners can take several minutes to scan large files. The Download Manager must wait until the scanner is done before it can access the file again.
I have a problem not listed in this troubleshooting section.
Please check other sections of this help page, and also the Download Manager FAQ.
