1.2 What Does This Mod Do?
==========================
The Steyr AUG F-88/GL Mod will add a Steyr AUG F-88, a Steyr F-88 with Grenade Launcher, and an assortment of kits which incorporate the Steyr with various secondary weapons. The Steyr is available only to Riflemen and Demolitions classes.
Currently I am working on a Ghost Recon mod based around the Australian Army and the Australian SASR, with the working project title being Flashpoint: Oceania. To accurately model the Australian Army soldier, it was necessary to include the Steyr AUG F-88. This is the first version of my Steyr AUG F-88 for general release so I can get feedback on the gun itself, so I can hopefully improve it for future releases.
1.3 Issues With This Mod
========================
This Steyr is the first ever model or mod I have created for any game. I only just started learning to use 3D Studio Max about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and when you see my model it will probably be self evident. The Steyr AUG F-88 is approximately 1300 polygons, and the Steyr AUG F-88/GL is approximately 1600 polygons, which is fairly acceptable, although Red Storm model their weapons at about 300 polygons.
Possible issues with this weapon that may need to be fixed after user testing or the availability of new development tools:
* Size - The gun appears to be much smaller than the regular models in the game. Although with this said, the Steyr is a much smaller gun than the M-16, which comes in at about 99 centimetres, compared to 79 centimetres for the Steyr.
* Hand placements - I am waiting for Mike Schell to hopefully release a new version of his Muzzle Flash/Brass Utility that allows the user to place the hand positions of the soldier holding the gun. The Steyr is an odd gun, with much of the butt sticking out through the soldiers shoulder. Hopefully this utility will allow me to place the hands a fraction further out to keep the gun away from the body a bit more.
* Clipping - There are some clipping issues regarding the hand placements and weapon placement, I spent ages trying to get the hands in the right position and the way they are is the best I can get them.
* Fire rate selection - Anyone who has used a Steyr, or knows about them will know that it is one of the few assault weapons that has no Selector Lever to choose the rate of fire, i.e. semi-automatic, automatic. When you squeeze the trigger lightly it will fire off a single round (ideal for long range), or if you hold the trigger down it will fire in automatic. This is impossible to implement into Ghost Recon, as far as I know, so I have had to include a semi-automatic mode, and a fully automatic mode that can be swapped between by the user.
If you have any suggestions on how to fix one of these problems please contact me at the email below.
1.4 What Is Flashpoint: Oceania About?
======================================
There is a distinct lack of mods based on the Australian Army and the Australian SASR for Ghost Recon, if any. Since Ghost Recon is such a great game, I decided to make a mod based around the Australian Army and Australian SASR, with a campaign based in the Australia/Oceania region.
Hopefully the final mod will include:
* New Uniforms and camos, possibly including new models.
* New weapons, such as the Steyr AUG F-88.
* New specialists and characters, including Australian SASR soldiers, as well as specialists from the armies of the Oceania region.
* New campaign and new missions - with your soldiers carrying out missions in locations such as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Indonesia and Australia. The campaign will bring together the missions in a storyline based on the unique security issues faced by the Australian Defence Force in keeping the Oceania region stable.
I will try and base the mod closely around the Australian Army, although it will not be 100% accurate since some poetic licence may be taken to stick to the storyline of the campaign.
If you think you might have some ideas or feedback regarding this mod, please feel free to contact me on the email address provided below. Also, if you are a current or former soldier of the Australia army, or can provide me with some information to use in the mod, please contact me.
2.1 Installation Notes:
=======================
1. Extract/Unzip the archive containing the mod to Ghostrecon\Mods folder, make sure you extract the files using the original folder names. If you are having trouble finding this directory, you can usually find the Mods folder at:
C:\Program Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon\Mods
2. Once you have the mod in the Mods folder, you must 'activate' the mod via Ghost Recon. Simply run Ghost Recon and on the main menu go to Options. In the options menu there will be a tab called "MODS", select this tab and you see a new screen that lists all the mods you have in your Mods folder. In this list you should see the name of this mod, 'Steyr AUG F-88/GL', click on this name then click 'Activate'. You will now see the name of the mod go from the left of screen, to the right of the screen, meaning it has been activated. If you don't see the name of this mod in the Mods menu then you have most likely extracted the mod to the wrong location.
3. Return to the game and you will now have a Steyr AUG F-88, a Steyr AUG F-88 with Grenade Launcher, and a few various kits using combinations of the weapons with existing weapons.
4. Close Ghost Recon and run it again, this will bypass the known bugs with running a mod for the first time.
2.2 Un-installation Notes:
=========================
1. You must do the opposite of what you did to activate the mod, namely going to Options -> MODS and selecting the mod, then instead of 'activating' the mod, you want to 'deactivate' it by pressing 'Deactivate'. You will now see the name of the mod go from the right of screen, to the left of the screen, meaning it has been deactivated.
2. The mod can happily sit in your Mods folder until you want to use it again, or you can delete the mod completely by selecting the folder 'Steyr_F88' and deleting it.
2.3 Troubleshooting
===================
Problem: The weapon description shows up as '!findkey', or the kit icons are blank.
Solution: Sometimes Ghost Recon won't find the correct name of the weapon when you activate the mod for the first time. Try restarting Ghost Recon and hoepfully it should have been resolved.
Problem: The weapon sounds for the Steyr are much lower than the other guns.
Solution: This also appears to happen the first time you run Ghost Recon, try closing Ghost Recon and running it again.
