FAQ - or - how to get it working...

Q: What sort of computer do I need to use this program?
A: You need a computer with a modern 3d graphics card - a 3dfx Voodoo
Banshee, an NVidia Riva TNT, a Matrox G400, all for example - or anything
better!
You also need Windows 95 or later, Direct X 7 and WinAmp software installed...

Q: I don't have WinAmp, do I need it before I can use this program?
A: Yes. Get it from www.winamp.com. It's free.

Q: Ok so how do I use it?
A: Like any other "WinAmp Visualisation Plugin". See the WinAmp
documentation for information on how to do that.

Q: The bear comes up OK. He stands with has hand to his ear, listening,
but he never dances. Why?
A: Could be a number of things. You might be trying to use WinAmp to
play one of your Audio CDs in your PC's CD drive. If so, sometimes
WinAmp doesn't supply its plugins with any information to dance from.
Have a look and see if any other WinAmp plugins seem to respond to
the music. If they don't work either, then it's a problem with your
WinAmp setup. Have a look in the WinAmp help to fix it.

One solution that sometimes works is to try changing your soundcard's
recording options so that "CD Audio" or "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear"
(depending on what soundcard you have) is the selected recording
source. See below for details on doing this.

If other WinAmp plugins appear to be working, but the Bear still
doesn't dance, try choosing "Configure Plugin" and then switching
from Direct Mode Analysis to WinAmp Analysis, or vice versa.
(see below for how to do this).

Q: The bear doesn't seem to dance in time to my music. Why not?
A: The bear hasn't learnt to dance that well, he's only a wee lad!
Try playing some music with a clearer beat, and he might dance
a little better. He really likes dance music!

Q: Can I make the bear dance to music played outside WinAmp, for
example to a RealAudio file, or a movie file, or even my DJ
friend who's plugged his record decks into my PC?
A: Yes, so long as you can get Direct Analysis mode to work. See
below for details...

Q: OK! What is Direct Analysis Mode?
A: Normally, the bear listens to WinAmp to work out where the beat
is. But you can also get him to listen to your Sound-Card hardware
directly. That way, he can dance to anything that your Sound-Card
is set up to record - including external sources, or sound from
programs other than WinAmp.

Q: Great! How do I use Direct Analysis Mode?
A: To switch Direct Analysis mode on or off, click on "Configure
Plugin..." on the WinAmp visualisation menu. Then click on
"Direct Analysis Mode" to switch it on, or "WinAmp Analysis
Mode" to switch it off and go back to the more compatible,
WinAmp mode.

Q: How do I choose what the Bear dances to in Direct Analysis Mode?
A: You have to set up your Sound-Card's mixer, to allow the bear to
hear any music. First bring up your mixer settings. This can be
done from the Windows Audio Control panel, or by double clicking
on the little speaker icon on your taskbar. It looks like a lot
of volume controls. Once you have it up, on the "Options" menu,
click on "Properties", then click "Recording Controls" and "OK",
then select one of the recording sources. Recommended ones are:

CD Audio - for making him dance to your CDs!

Stereo Mixer or What U Hear - to make him dance to other
programs running on your PC

Line-in or Microphone - for making him dance to music
which is plugged in to your soundcard's line-in socket

Which ones are available depends on your PC setup. Make sure the
volume is turned up on your chosen source, and you should be
ready to watch him dance!

Q: Damn! Direct Analysis Mode doesn't seem to work! He wont dance!
He just sits there listening.
A: Direct mode only works on some sound cards; if it doesn't work and
you've double checked your mixer settings (see above), you'll just
have to stick to WinAmp analysis mode.

Q: The Bear is dancing in time, but sometimes he seems a little bit
out of sync.
A: Wait a bit - give him a chance to get back in time. Or, if you feel
like helping him out, try tapping the space bar once "on the beat" -
sometimes that can give him the clue he needs to get going.

Q: This is really cool! What about other creatures?
A: Keep an eye on the news-ticker in the plugin, and our website...
We might just treat you if we get a minute off from finishing
Black & White!

Q: Talking of Black & White - when's it out?
A: As soon as humanly possible!

Known problems

At the moment this plug-in does not support full-screen operation; so on
graphics cards which only operate full-screen (3dfx 1, 2) this will not work.
