Q2 to Q3 Converted Maps (The Edge & Warehouse)

"The Edge" and "Warehouse" from Quake 2 converted for play in Quake 3: Arena. Contains original sounds, textures, and bot support.

Unauthorized conversion of "The Edge" & "Warehouse"

---------------------------------------------------

Thanks for downloading the unauthorized conversion of "The Edge" & "Warehouse"

levels from Quake 2. For those of you unfamiliar with these maps they were

taken from id's patch to Quake 2 that incorporated 8 deathmatch maps.

First off, to do the conversion I simply used a program called "Q2toQ3A.exe V 2.00".

This program said that it converts only small Quake 2 maps, but I decided to see

what would happen when I converted some of the maps. These two levels converted

almost perfectly. "The Edge" has virtually no loss of features at all and the

only thing you really lose in "Warehouse" are the moving boxes to get to the BFG.

However you can still rocket jump to get it, so it is quite acheiveable.

If you were wondering about the other DM levels, well those really didn't turn out

so well. Most of them had ladders which no longer work in Quake 3 making many

areas inaccessible, and others had some really funky glitches. The two that are

included in this pack contain very little problems, and so that is why I choose them.

Some things to keep in mind: All chainguns have been converted to lightning guns.

All hyperblasters have been converted to plasma guns. All regular and super shotguns

are no standard Quake 3 shotguns. The maps do contain bot support, however the bots

seem to have some trouble on these maps. You will notice times when they will simply

just stop next to a wall and do absolutely nothing. They won't even return fire if

they are shot. I am not sure why they do this, but it only happens in about 3

spots in "The Edge" and "Warehouse." Once you kill the bot in that spot and they

spawn somewhere else they are back to their oldselves again though.

If you are running in low texture quality mode you will notice the levels look like

you are running around in mud. As far as I can tell Quake 3 automatically lowers

the quality of the Quake 2 textures even though it never really happened in Quake 2.

The good news is that since these levels are not quite as complex, polygon wise

your FPS are generally high so you can up the texture quality.

Included in this pak file are the original sounds and textures from Quake 2. Also,

I have included two demos for those unfamiliar with the maps and want a quick look

at the map. Heh, the bots were in "Hurt Me Plenty" if you were wondering why they

were missing me.

If you need to get in contact with me simply email Chod at [email protected].

Hope you enjoy the levels. Personally I think "The Edge" is very much like a Quake

3 Arena map.

Installation

------------

Put the q2toq3.pk3 file in your baseq3 folder in your Quake3 installation folder.

Now, that was easy wasn't it?

Playing

-------

To play you can either join a server or create your own just as long as everyone

has the pak file. The map names are as follows...

q3q2dm1 "The Edge"

q3q2dm8 "Warehouse"

To start up a server with these maps simply enter /map q3q2dm1 or /map q3q2dm8

at the console along with any other parameters you wish.

Each level has a demo with the corresponding name briefly showing you the level.

To run those demos simply type /demo q3q2dm1.dm3 or /demo q3q2dm8.dm3.

Known Issues

------------

Problem: There are no moving crates to get to the BFG in "Warehouse."

Workaround: Rocket Jump up to the BFG.

Problem: The bots sometimes just stand there and don't fire at all.

Workaround: Unknown. For now just kill them off and once they respawn

they will be okay. This only happens in a few spots.

Problem: Everything looks like mud, the textures are really bad.

Workaround: Set your texture quality settings higher. At max setting

they look perfect.

If you experience any problems other than anything I have mentioned in this readme

please email at [email protected] and let me know. Any feeback, suggestions,

comments, or complaints, are appreciated. I am going to try to fix some of the

decent Quake 2 levels so they are compatible with Quake 3.

creating one of the first converter programs that works well.

"The Edge" and "Warehouse" are copyright id software. The conversions of these

levels should never be distributed commercially. I made pak file purely for the

enjoyment of the levels. If id wants me to take these down I will do so at their

request. These levels are unauthorized, but authentic. Thanks to id software

for creating kick ass games all the time.

that really is mine. Take my ideas and I frag ya!
