Age of Empires 3 - Strategic Objectives: Russo-Turkish Wars Map

"Strategic Objectives" can qualify as a new game type. It allows to capture abandon buildings (such as Forts and Barracks), and even re-capture them from the AI and vice versa. Captured buildings offer either economic bonus or military bonus (free units).

Strategic Objectives: Russo-Turkish Wars

"Strategic Objectives" is now available for download.

It is available for AOE 3 Vanilla and TWC.

Download it here: http://aoe3.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=1276

Please read carefully how the new features work, and the rules for the “Challenge and Give Away”.

New Features

“Strategic Objectives” can qualify as a new game type.

It allows to capture abandon buildings (such as Forts and Barracks), and even re-capture them from the AI and vice versa.

Captured buildings offer either economic bonus or military bonus (free units).

Players can also construct Fixed Guns anywhere on the map.

I will make a special version of “Strategic Objectives” for online players once the support for Custom Scenarios Online is implemented.

The Challenge

Players are invited to beat the “Strategic Objectives” scenario on either “Normal” and/or “Hard” level (with “Hard” AI).

The Give Away

Players who meet the challenge will have a chance to win 1 out of 6 games (via drawing) that I am going to give away (3 games for each category).

Players can participate in both categories (Normal and Hard) in order to increase their chances to win, but they can only win once.

The 6 games that I am giving away are:

2 AOE3: TWC,

2 Company of Heroes

2 Supreme Commander.

I also have a secondary game list as an option for players who prefer another RTS game.

The complete secondary game list is listed bellow.

All players are welcome to take on the “Strategic Objectives” challenge, even players from other counties (I live in the US).

I will also give away one RTS game from the list above (or secondary list) to the player who had referred the most players to the “Strategic Objective” Challenge.

For more details see the “Rules” section.

UPDATE:

Ensemble Studios has pledged additional prizes.

The prizes that Ensemble is donating are:

• 3 Copies of Flight Sim X

• 3 Copies of Dungeon Siege 2

• 3 Copies of The WarChiefs

• 10 Age of Empires III watches with leather bands

• 3 Age of Empires III hats

Versions

There are several different versions with various difficulties and civilizations.

There are different set of version for both AOE 3 Vanilla and TWC.

There is also one version with a story where the rest of the versions are skirmish scenarios.

Game play

There are 25 abandon structures around the map such as Forts, Barracks, and Mills that are guarded by guardians (who are hostile to anyone who passes by) and any of these structures can be captured by any one of the players.

In addition to that players can re-capture them from each other.

Since every building offers either economic bonus or military bonus it is crucial to capture as many of these structures in order to achieve victory.

There are also 3 fixed guns on top of hills that can be captured, and 3 great cannons that can be captured as well.

Once a player captures any one of the great cannons he can use it to build a fixed gun anywhere on the map after he reaches the fortress age.

There are 11 identical structures/units on each side of map and 9 additional structures/units in the middle of the map.

On each side of the map there are:

2 Mills with 10 working villagers (that can be captured with the mill for better economy).

1 Plantation with 10 working villagers (economic bonus).

2 Barracks (Military Bonus: 1 free infantry every 30 seconds).

1 Fort (Military Bonus: 1 free infantry and 1 Cavalry every 30 seconds).

1 Factory (economic or military bonus).

1 Bank (economic bonus)

1 Fixed Gun.

1 Great Cannon (can be converted to a fixed gun).

1 Outpost.

In the middle of the map (between the two sides) there are:

1 Fixed Gun.

1 Great Cannon (can be converted to a fixed gun).

1 Plantation with 10 working villagers (economic bonus).

1 Factory (economic or military bonus).

2 Stables (Military Bonus: 1 free Cavalry every 30 seconds).

1 Artillery Depot with an Outpost ((Military Bonus: 1 free Falconet every 90 seconds).

1 Dock with an Outpost (Economic bonus: 1 free fishing boat every 60 seconds up to 20 boats per player).

1 Church (Economic bonus: 1 free Priest every 120 seconds).

For TWC version a Saloon is replacing one of the Stables, and the player who holds it gets 2 free mercenary units every 60 seconds.

Some exceptions may apply to the amount of time that the free units are delivered.

That would depend on the civ you play.

For example if you play Ottoman then you would receive a great bombard every 150 seconds instead of falconet every 90 seconds.

If you play with Germany then you would receive units from the Fort every 40 seconds instead of 30 seconds.

In general, If the units received for the civ are strong units, then the time to receive them will be longer (for balance reasons).

Again, any of these structures/units can be captured and re-captured between the players.

However, Great Cannons can only be captured once.

In order to capture any one of these structures the player has to have at least 7 units near it while no guardians or enemy units are left standing in that area.

There is an exception to this rule with fixed guns and great cannons where it takes only one unit to capture any one of them.

Military buildings that can be captured are invulnerable (so they don't get destroyed by the fixed guns).

Players get free units from some captured buildings as long as they don't go over 250 population.

Buildings that can be captured have two brown flags on both sides of the building.

That is how the player can know if that building can be captured or not.

Instructions how to build fixed guns:

Fixed Guns can be constructed once the player gets to the Fortress age and captures a Great Cannon.

At age 3 and 4 the player will get a railroad worker at his TC.

There are two ways to build Fixed Guns.

1. Select the railroad worker and place it on top of the great cannon.

If you want to construct the Fixed Gun on top of a hill then you have to use this option.

This method will work as long as you don’t assign the railroad worker to a Control Group.

2. If you want to construct your fixed gun without loosing your railroad worker (or in case he died), then after you capture the Great Cannon move it to the location you want.

Once it arrives there, select the great cannon and your explorer at the same time (both of them have to be selected) and the great cannon will be converted into a fixed gun.

If you want to construct the fixed gun on top of a hill then use option one.

With this option the fixed gun will be constructed next to where the great cannon stood, not at the same spot.

Fixed guns can be very helpful in helping the explorer to get treasures and kill guardians.

Later on they are crucial to achieve victory.

Additional Game Play Rules

After 10 minutes of game play the number of villagers is limited to 50 so players cannot train any more villagers.

That makes capturing mills and plantations more important since you can capture or kill their villagers and the other player cannot train new ones (if he still has more than 50 villagers).

- Villagers have 150 more HP.

- When a mill or plantation (that can be captured) is destroyed, the 10 villagers that come with it will be destroyed automatically.

- Fishing boats are limited to 20.

- Explorer has more HP so he doesn't get killed by guardians right away.

- Fishing boats and natives are cheaper.

- Cavalry and cannons take less population.

- Fixed Gun's range was reduced by 15 (it is 55 now for land and still 70 against ships).

- Existing fixed guns have more HP than fixed guns that are being built.

Scenario Versions

There are 3 main versions with different civilizations:

Ottoman VS Russia – the story version

Spanish VS British - skirmish

Germany VS Spain - skirmish

There are also 3 levels of difficulties for each version (Hard, Normal, and Easy).

Normal and Hard difficulties (for any one of these versions) will qualify for the challenge and give away.

All these 9 versions are available for both “AOE 3: Original” (Vanilla) and “AOE 3: TWC”.

That is a total of 18 scenario versions.

Please note that “Normal” and “Hard” levels are both with “Hard” AI.

The trailer of the file name indicates the level for each scenario.

The main scenario with the story is called: “Strategic Objectives: Russo-Turkish Wars”.

For more information about “Russo-Turkish Wars” please visit these web sites:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Turkish_Wars

http://www.bartleby.com/65/ru/RussoTur.html

The scenarios for TWC are more fun to play since there is also a Saloon that gives powerful free mercenary units periodically once it is captured.

TWC versions also have spies and additional mercenaries in the 40 card home city.

Release Date

EDIT: Thursday, March 15th.

Original Music

The Story version of “Strategic Objectives” can be played with my original music that I composed many many years ago, lol.

These two tracks are included in the ZIP file.

The Challenge and Give Away Rules

In order to meet the Challenge Players have to beat any of the “Strategic Objectives” versions that are on either “Normal” or “Hard” level (with “Hard” AI).

No cheating (via cheat codes or any other way) is allowed.

Double submissions will be disqualified from the drawing.

The same is true for players who used any form of cheating.

In TWC version, Trade Monopoly should not be used as it doesn’t qualify as an official victory.

Players who meet the challenge will have to submit proof of victory via email in order to qualify for the give away.

During the game a notice will be given to save the scenario once the AI’s population had dropped bellow 30.

Players will need to submit that saved game with a screen shot that shows the victory message that is displayed once the player won the game.

Please note that when a scenario game is saved and then continued from the saved game, the population indicator shows the population as zero when in fact the actual population is much higher (some kind of bug).

The “Challenge” versions of "Strategic Objectives" translate population zero to a loss, which means that these versions of the scenario cannot be saved and continued later.

This means that players will have to play the scenario from start to finish in one time, unless you are using AOE 3: TWC Patch 1.03 which fixed this problem.

Players that were referred to the challenge by another player should also mention the person who referred them, so this person receives the credit for the referral.

I will give the players a period of 3 weeks to submit their victory proofs before the drawing takes place.

Players can submit their proof of victory until April 6th.

The 6 games that I am giving away (primary list) are:

2 AOE3: TWC,

2 Company of Heroes

2 Supreme Commander.

I also have a secondary list of games as a substitute for the primary list.

Ensemble Studios has pledged additional prizes.

The prizes that Ensemble is donating are:

• 3 Copies of Flight Sim X

• 3 Copies of Dungeon Siege 2

• 3 Copies of The WarChiefs

• 10 Age of Empires III watches with leather bands

• 3 Age of Empires III hats

So we have a total of 15 games.

There will be separate drawings for “Normal” and “Hard” levels.

9 games will be allocated for the “Normal” level and 6 games to the “Hard” level.

This means that players who submit proof of victory for

both levels will have better chances of winning.

However, players cannot win twice.

Each player should list his game choices from the primary and/or secondary list.

However, there is no guarantee he will get the game of his choice, but I will do my best to accommodate as many players as possible.

The following is a secondary game list to choose from:

LOTR: BFME 2, Star Wars: Empire at War, Spellforce 2, Act of War: Direct Action, Age of Mythology, Rome: Total War, Rise and Fall, Rise of Legends, Heroes of Might and Magic V, Joint Task Force, Warhammer 40K: Dark Crusade, Command & Conquer: Generals Deluxe, Black & White 2, Space Rangers 2, Armies of Exigo, and Empire Earth 2.

Please note that the games from the primary list are all brand new games.

However, some of the games from the secondary list may be used games.

Everybody will have the same chance to win Age of Empires III watch and Age of Empires III hat (regardless if they won against “Hard” level or not).

The player who referred the most players (with proof of victory) to the challenge will win one RTS game from the primary or secondary list based on his choice(He can even choose “Command and Conquer 3” if that is what he wants).

Players can not refer themselves.

In the event of a referral tie, a drawing will take place.

A tie breaker would be a case where one player submits a proof of victory where the other player doesn’t.

The player who submitted a proof of victory would win in such case.

Sending your Proof of Victory

Proof of victory should be sent to [email protected] by April 6th 2007.

The subject line should look like this:

“Strategic Objectives” Challenge – “Normal” for “Normal” level only or

“Strategic Objectives” Challenge – “Hard” for “Hard” level only or

“Strategic Objectives” Challenge – “Normal” and “Hard” for both “Normal” and “Hard” levels.

It’s OK to send proof of victory for “Normal” and “Hard” levels separately, but please don’t submit proof of victory for the same level twice.

Attach to the email the saved game that you saved just before you won the game (after you were notified to save it via a pop up window).

Attach to the email one screen shot or two showing the victory message (after you won the game).

Make sure the screen shot is taken above the AI’s base (or what is left of it).

Specify your game choices for the event you won in the drawing.

In the list of your game choices you can include one or two games from the primary list of game prizes.

You can also include in your list as many games as you like from the secondary list of game prizes (optional prizes).

If you were referred to the “Strategic Objectives” Challenge by someone else, then please mention his name and his email address, so he can get the credit for that.

Specify your full name and mailing address where to ship the prize (in the event that you win one of the prizes), and your forum id (if you have one).

Signing up

Sending your proof of victory to the provided email address will automatically sign you up for the challenge and give away as long as you submitted all the information and material specified above as it was requested.

Players who sign up to the “Strategic Objectives Challenge and Giveaway” automatically AGREE with ALL the rules, settings, prizes and conditions.

Special Thanks

I want to thank Furby_Killer (also known as Schildpad) for helping me test “Strategic Objectives” and for his advice.

I also want to thank pftq for his great advanced effects.

Many thanks to Ensemble Studious for donating additional prizes for the “Strategic Objectives” challenge and give away.

I also want to thank them for working hard on the Custom Scenarios Online feature that all of us are waiting for.

Why am I doing this?

My objective is to promote custom scenarios for AOE 3.

I believe that Custom Scenarios can offer great new game play experience to many players, and we should do all we can do to promote that.

I am also conducting this challenge and give away to promote Custom Scenarios Online.

Soon (hopefully within 2 or 3 months) we will be able to play Custom Scenarios Online.

We have here in this community very talented and dedicated custom scenario designers who are working very hard to provide the community with top quality custom scenarios.

So please show your support and appreciation by playing some of the available custom scenarios and give the designers some feedback in the form of comments, suggestions, and even posting reviews for the custom scenarios that you played.

We can make great custom scenarios for single and online play, but we also need the support of the community.

Thank you,

Moshe Levi
