2. Troubleshooting

DirectX Problems:

DirectX® 8.1b or later must be installed on your computer before you can play Joan of Arc. You can download the software from Microsoft Windows Update at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If you encounter video or sound problems when using DirectX, go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx/ for the latest troubleshooting information.

You should also obtain the latest DirectX-compatible drivers from your video or sound card manufacturer.

Windows 2000 Service Pack:

If you have problems running Joan of Arc on Windows 2000 and have already updated your video drivers, try downloading the Windows 2000 Service Pack version 2 or later and install it on your machine.

Crashes and Lock-Ups:

The Installer keeps stalling after a certain percentage has completed.

Your hard drive could be out of space. Please free up additional space by removing unwanted programs and reinstall Joan of Arc.

Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your hard drive. If this is the case, run the scandisk program and use the Thorough option. After scandisk finishes and informs you that your drive is free of errors, try installing Joan of Arc again.

Joan of Arc crashes to the desktop with no error messages.

- Make sure the game has been installed properly.

- Make sure DirectX 8.1b has been installed properly.

- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card, and that they are DirectX 8.x-compatible - or higher.

- Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.

- Make sure you have run Scandisk and that no errors are reported.

- Run Disk Defragmenter.

- Clean out any old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\WINx\TEMP directory on your hard drive (you may use Windows Explorer to do this).

- Make sure you do not have any resident anti-virus or third-party Windows memory management utilities running prior to playing Joan of Arc.

- Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.

- Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game.

Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Joan of Arc, you should reboot your computer before starting a new session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to use your video or sound hardware.

Video Problems:

Video card and sound card manufacturers often have updated drivers which may improve performance and stability. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date. Depending on what video cards you use, you may obtain newer drivers from the following web sites:

http://www.nvidia.com

http://www.ati.com

http://www.matrox.com

Motherboard Chipset:

If you continue to encounter performance-related problems and have already ensured that your system is DirectX 8.1b-compatible, you should check for the availability of updated motherboard chipset drivers with your system manufacturer. Updating motherboard drivers usually enhances the performance and functionality of your controllers. Please consult with your system manufacturer for assistance or your motherboard manual for driver updates and possible solutions.

Sound Problems:

If you experience skips while listening to the speeches in the game, you should first check if you have the latest sound drivers installed in your system. Although possible, we do not recommend using your motherboard's on-board sound chip to play sound.
