PRELIMINARY BRIEF
This patrol begins the third phase of the Operation. You will be conducting a series of recce patrols circling the suspected objective with the intent of locating patrol bases providing security screens. Phase 3 is to be completed no later than 0500hrs 25 Aug 2003. When you will take up a defensive until the initiation of Phase 4 at 2100 25 Aug 2003.

GROUND
Your GPS Command Map has been enhanced with satellite imagery. Your patrol area is typified by dense rain forest, with a black track forming a U shape centered in your area.

SITUATION
Enemy

Strength: Estimated platoon size

Weapons: Variety of small arms, explosives and pyrotechnics.

Identification: FARC guerrilas wear an assortment of military and civilian atire.

Reactions, Tactics, Habits:This FARC stronghold is one of the major links between Colombia and Ecuador. These forces are well trained in jungle warfare and are experienced having fought against Colombian and Ecuadorian military forces. They are aggressive and will attack anyone found within their perimiters.

Formations: Typical formation for a six man patrol during low threat is single line. During high threat situations, the patrol divides into three, 2 man fire teams and extends the distance between fire teams. This formation hides numbers and location, but allows for quick fire support and flanking ability.

Locations: Intelligence reports that a section sized enemy patrol will likely cover your entire patrol area. Further they assess two more sections located at the patrol base, one being camp security and one off duty.

Routes: Unknown.

Intentions: The enemy's intention remains unchanged. The guerrilas at this patrol base are committed to protecting the local headquarters and maintaining their hold on this region of the country.

MISSION

Rainbow Team Alpha is to conduct a recce of the patrol base in the area of GRID 5822 by 2300hrs 24 August 2003.

EXECUTION

General Outline
This patrol will be conducted in 4 phases as follows:

Phase 1: Conduct a recce of the forest south of the blacktrack looking for enemy patrols. This is the most likely area for enemy patrols. Action on locating the enemy: Do not engage. Shadow the enemy patrol to determine the patrol routes and patrol base. Action on contact: Immediately break contact with the enemy. Do not engage in prolonged combat. You must conserve your ammunition and troops for the assault on the objective. After you've broken contact, pull back to your previous rendez vous point and wait to shadow the next patrol after normal activity levels have resumed.

Phase 2: Conduct a recce of the blacktrack looking for enemy patrols and observation posts. Colombian military officials have told us that they have lost several security patrols along this blacktrack. Action on locating the enemy: Do not engage. Shadow any enemy road patrol to determine the patrol routes and patrol base. Avoid OPs at all cost. If you are spotted, the patrol base and local HQ will be alerted to your presence jeopardizing the entire Operation. Action on contact: Immediately break contact with the enemy. Do not engage in prolonged combat. After you've broken contact, pull back to your previous rendez vous point and wait to shadow the next patrol after normal activity levels have resumed. On contact with an OP, immediately neutralize the OP as quickly and silently as possible.

Phase 3: Conduct a recce of the forest north of the blacktrack looking for enemy patrols. This is the most likely area for the patrol base. Action on locating the enemy: As per Phase 1. Action on contact: As per Phase 1

Phase 4: Proceed to the North East Corner of your patrol area. Establish a defensive and wait patrol orders via Sat Phone.
