AFTERWARDS Beta v2.0

Afterwards is a total conversion for Q3A that has two game modes, new weapons, new player models and skins, and six maps.

Chapter 1: The Starfire Phenomenon

In the latter half of the year 2013, astronomers discovered a terrifying, yet ultimately simple, phenomenon where a star would generate a solar flare so large that it could penetrate a planet’s magnetic field and ultimately ravage the planet itself. Because of the power of the effect, and humanities fear, many wondered if it could happen here. Scientists and government officials, however, scoffed at such an idea, not truly understanding the effect.

Scientists, after witnessing the phenomenon, assumed the Starfire Effect to be akin to a solar storm and solar flares that occur regularly across the Sun’s surface. Because of the sun’s enormous size and distance, generating a solar flare millions of miles across is rather simple, and indeed happens regularly. Earth’s magnetic field is strong enough, and the flare weak enough, to protect her denizen’s. However, as we unfortunately discovered, there was much more happening.

It seems that the Starfire Effect also creates a large amount of unusually massive solar prominences. Each prominence was almost five time the size of the earth and over twice their normal length. They threw millions of tons of cooled material racing across space at 600 miles per second, reaching Earth almost two days after the prominences exploded. This matter moved in the wake of the Strafire’s solar flare. When these particles hit a planet, they could ravage anything in its path.

Chapter 2: The Storm Hits

On the early morning of September 10, 2018, the sun succumbed to this Starfire-effect. Within eight minutes, astronomers noticed the sun’s over-activity and quickly warned the populace. There was little that could be done, however, and humanities spirit seemed to be broken. Prayer vigils were held and millions people chose to take their own lives than wait for a few days for the solar flare to kill them.

The tip of the expelled plasma, free from its maker, finally hit the Earth around eleven o’clock, EST on September 12, 2018 and devastated large portions of the globe. The bombardment of protons and neutrinos created huge Auroras across the globe that could be seen in the bright of day, disrupted radio waves and brought down large portions of the world’s powergrid. Many assumed this to be all that would happen, and thanked God that they were still alive. An hour later, the matter expelled by the solar prominences hit the Earth.

Although these gases were comparatively smaller than what they were when they exploded into space, they were large enough to survive entry into our atmosphere. It was these particles that spelled the end for the Earth. The heat they emitted was more than enough to melt and destroy anything or anyone in their path. This rain of fire lasted for almost five days, and destroyed large portions of the planet. Only remote sections of the south Pacific, particularly Eastern Australia and parts of Antarctica managed to survive in good order.

Chapter 3: A Grim Situation

Earth was now a different creature than it once was. The Northern Hemisphere was all but ice, and global sea levels dropped tens of feet. Ash rain fell; destroying much that was left unscathed by the astronomical event. In some deserts rain fell regularly; others less than normal. Rain forests were decimated and turned to dust and ash by fires. Hurricanes and tornadoes twice the size the average size were spawned regularly, and world temperatures were thrown into chaos.

In the end, over three quarters of the world’s population was wiped out, and those were the good estimates. In all areas across the planet, the remaining population banded together into Tribes and the rebuilding process began. Australia, the only major place where civilization survived, began to send out foodstuffs and medicine. Unfortunately, this created more damage than the Australians had thought.

Wherever a shipment would land, the bands of people would fall upon the food like ravenous wolves. Deaths were not uncommon due to fighting, and shortly there after, Australia had to pull back and rethink their strategy. The newly formed Tribes, however, remained angry and hostile. There were numerous reports of war bands that hunted other humans as food. Thankfully, the majority of the population did not succumb to such measures.

Chapter 4: Humanities Worst Enemy

Since a part of the sun essentially exploded, we always assumed that it would be the forces of nature and the cosmos that would ultimately destroy humanity. We were wrong. The Australians, seeking peace, knew the only way for our race to succeed was to band together. They met with as many of the coastal tribes as possible, in exchange for food, clothing, and protection, theses Tribes would swear allegiance to Australia, and eventually, the New World Order, whenever it was to be established.

To many, this seemed too high a price to pay, and they openly refused. Some secretly plotted against the Australians, and others attacked. Outsiders wishing aide flooded the Australians Coastal colonies. Eventually, Australian army had to be dispatched to keep the peace. On more than one occasion, innocent blood was spilt, on both sides. Proponents in the Australian Parliament gave this as proof that the Tribes could not be trusted, and the Tribes did the same.

Several months past and both sides merely talked, never backing themselves up. But in April 2024, six years after the Starfire effect, the Tribes attacked what once was Los Angeles with high-grade weapons and military coordination. Other strikes soon followed. Some were successes, others failures. But all of these attacks were aimed at the Australian army, never at civilians. That changed In December of that same year.

Chapter 5: The Last Straw

By December, the fighting between Tribe and Australian forces escalated, and numerous Tribes, formerly under Australian support, threw off the Island nation’s rule, and pledged to kick the Australians back to their continent. At a summit in Indonesia, which had practically become part of Australia, a group of Tribe assassins landed and slaughtered over one hundred innocents, politicians, and army men. With that attack, and the horrifying reports that came out of it, Australia left the table of compromise.

Days later, all across the planet, Napalm bombs were dropped from high-flying Australian bombers. This attack caused almost as much destruction as the Starfire effect, and brought anyone who had this point been neutral into the fight. Any man, woman, or even child that could fight was given a gun. Transports carrying hundreds of troops left port, and a new war began . . .

Sidebar: Plans for Survival

Those who lived in the wastelands, as they were now called, thought up all sorts of extravagant ways of waiting for the earth to restore its former weather patterns. Some called for underground or underwater habitats. More extravagant designs were concocted to move large portions of the population to the Moon or Mars. Many of these ideas, particularly the ones dealing with space colonies, died quickly, either because of lack of resources or lack of spine. However, at the time of this writing, there are many rumors of underground settlements, and at least one underwater one. But most of the planet chooses to wait the chaos to pass with a limited amount of change. Such an idea is, quite frankly, preposterous.

Still, through ash rain and withering crops, humanities spirit is showing like a gleaming light in the midst of fog. If it wasn't for the events that happened late in 2022, We may have kept this beacon of hope.
